Home Made Vanilla Extract

I would have never ever thought of making Home made vanilla Extract, I didn't even know we coulf make them at home, untill Bee @ Jugalbandi told me that I should make vanilla extract at home when I had mentioned to her I brought back 75 vanilla beans back from my trip to India.

So one late september sunny afternoon , I made them and it has been sitting in a dark place till now. It looks and smell fabulous. I still have not used them.
I don't remember from were I got the recipe, i do remember that it was written after two months you can add 2 tbsp of dark rum so that it gives a darker colour to the essence, which I didn't do.
So thankyou Bee for giving me this wonderful idea for making homemade vanilla essence.

Ingridients:
350 ml vodka
3 vanilla beans (edited a year later, when i made them again i added 2 more vanilla beans plus I split the vanilla beans when i add to the bottle)
glass jar

Split the vanilla beans in half.
Put vanilla beans in a bottle with a tight fitting lid .Pour the vodka to it.
Give the bottle a good shake every once in a while. Store in a dark, cool place for 2 months or longer.
You can keep topping off with vodka once in a while as you use it, just remember to give it a good shake.

  43. This is a revelation to me! Is alcohol usually used to make the extract or is this just this particular recipe? And shouldn't it be called vanilla vodka? :-)

  44. HC

I have my vanilla extract on since about three years now. However I use artisanal Rum as alcohol (I like the caramel taste it imparts at the same time)

  45. Thankyo all for your wonderful coments. Even i was sirprised that we could make them at home.

Divya I got the vanila beans from Munnar in Kerala

Sra even the extract we buy from shops are made with alchol. Atleast when wemake at home we know we are using the best alchol which is there.
