Hotel Sambar
When I was young and living at home we had a family friend who lived closer to our home and that Aunty used to make sambar which is so delicous , I have to tell you I have never had such delicous sambar anywhere else .
She used to fry her spices etc.... and then she make the paste in traditional way. I have no idea what the english name is, well my Indian friends will know what it is , the stone were they make the paste.
Don't know what all spices were there, but it hink she used to add coconut, fry them brow with the spices and then grind them ( i might be wrong too, i wa snot inturested in cooking at that time at all) the sambar was so so yummy.
I always make sambar don't think always means every day, i would say once in a blue moon I make them and then it is with shop bought sambar powder. I am not complaining it still taste good.
But then making the same sambar for th alast 10 or more years, I think one gets fed up and I know one place for delicious Indian food is Asha's Foodie's Hope .
And there I found this recipe for Hotel sambar and I thought why not give a try.
Well I have to say it was super super super delicious we all loved it.
I followed the exact recipe, the only thing i did different was, I added Drumsticks and I don't have those small red onions we get in the India shop so i used normal shallots.
And it was not made with shop bought powder, it was made with home made powder.
While I was making the sambar hubby even came to the kitchen and remarked hmmmmm that smell good.
Asha served them with idlies, but I serve them with Dosa, well not the dosa from scratch, it was form Gits packet.
Sending this to Priya's Healing Foods- Onion event and for a event which was started also by Priya and this month the host is Padma of Padma's Recipes
I must say it is after a long time I am joining up in a event, mostly I forget were and when the events are ......
I think whatever we make ourselves from scratch are always much tastier. This sounds very delicious.
ReplyDeletelove sambar and this one looks delicious. I follow a recipe that my dance teacher shared with me.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't interested staying in the kitchen when I was still living with my mum at home....hehe...now I really miss lots of traditional food I used to have...
ReplyDeleteShallot sound even better for the dish...I think it's more aromatic and flavourful.
Sambhar looks very inviting :)

ReplyDeleteSambhar is always from the scratch for me and rarely I make with store bought powder.
ReplyDeleteAdding drumstick definitely enhances the flavor of sambhar.
Very inviting click, HC.
Hi Finla, so good that you made sambhar powder at home, nothing to beat that. Must try Asha's sambhar masala for a change.
ReplyDeleteI do think even I got interested in cooking after marriage Finla, where you are on your own :-)...and sambhar made with home-made powders are something class apart that I have very well understood, the aroma and smell tastes so heavenly.THis hotel sambhar recipe is now on my to-do list..
ReplyDeletehugs and smiles
Your description of the sambar makes me want to have some now. Nice pic.
ReplyDeleteIf you ever see the sambar that is served in the hotels here in Maharashtra, you will never want to have them again. But I love sambar and am surely going to try this version of Asha's and yours. Looks wonderful. :-)
ReplyDeleteLooks wonderful Finla, thanks for trying the dish. You can add veg veggies you have there, even boiled Eggs will be nice too, just my kids like it! :)
ReplyDeleteWish I had Drumsticks, I do get frozen ones sometimes, not that good. You are right, nothing like fresh ground masala but most times we don''t have the patience or time like our mothers and grandmothers used to do.
Enjoy!:)
Looks really good. Love sambar but I have heard so much about Hotel Sambar, I bet it is diff from what I am used to
ReplyDeletehome made sambar powder is really good and fresh than the store bought ones and using it in sambhar def turns out great, i too love asha's blog , will check out her recipe as well
ReplyDeleteAsha hi hi i know, i have time to make them but i am reluctant to do it.
ReplyDeleteShobha; Pari do try you will love it.

ReplyDeleteHi, I just found your blog and I am so excited because my friend and I are learning to cook Indian food, we LOVE LOVE Indian food. I can't wait to try some of your recipes.
ReplyDeletesambar made with shallots tastes yummy..here they call shallots 'sambar onions'! I can imagine how tasty it was with drumsticks in it!
ReplyDeleteLooks very delicious. This would go very well with paratha or nan. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love indian food, all the spices, and when you are cooking the whole house smells amazing. Thanks for coming to my site, I'm happy I found your blog, you have yummy looking dishes here.
ReplyDeletethats a very nice sambar
ReplyDeleteHi Happy, Am a huge fan of sambar-- my sis-in-law makes fabulous sambar powder and she gave me some when she was last year. I am holding on to it with all my life :)
ReplyDeleteYour sambar looks delicious with all the veggies in it. Desi loves drumsticks in sambar.
Nothing beats the fresh ground masala, I am not big fan of sambar but make it every week :)
ReplyDeleteI liked the name :) I too crave for a different taste of sambar rather than the ones I make sometimes...
ReplyDeleteI see the recipe includes tamarind paste and tomato sauce which is a very nice combo. I can imagine how delicious this dish will turn out.
ReplyDeleteLooks great! I'm an absolute fan of Sambhar made from scratch! See you on Sunday ;-)
ReplyDeleteLooks fabulous and I am sure it tasted awesome as well !
ReplyDeleteLove this sambar looks delectable:)
ReplyDeleteYum!I would love some right now with Dosa. I started cooking at 14 'coz my parents both worked and I was home before them. I have always loved to cook and eat, lol. So, that helped out a lot.
ReplyDeleteYou know there are so many ways of making Sambar based on the region you come from. We, the South Indians, or well, I was raised on Sambar with no coconut added. It was still so delicious.
I want to give this a try. Lovely color and looks extremely good with the drumsticks and shallots (so what if you don't get the red ones? ) ;-)
ReplyDeleteSounds tasty :)
